Google can save Search images and audio to improve AI

Published: Updated:

The Save Media setting allows Google to store images, files, audio, and video used with Search services and use them to improve AI models.

Google is gradually rolling out Search Services History with a Save Media option. When both settings are enabled, an account can store images, files, audio, and video from interactions with Search services, including Lens, Search Live, and speaking practice in Translate.

What does the setting cover?

This does not mean the entire Google Photos library. It covers media uploaded or recorded while using services included in Search Services History. Google says saved media may be used to develop and improve AI models. Data selected for training is disconnected from the account and may be retained for up to four years.

How can saving be disabled?

Open Search Services History in My Activity and turn off Save Media. Turning it off does not delete media saved earlier; those items need to be removed separately.

For a business, the practical rule is simple: do not upload documents containing customer data or other sensitive information to Search without first checking account and organization settings.
